Our paint grade mantels are made from the highest quality Gypsum, which is a mineral. Minerals are non combustible; therefore, they will not burn and there is zero flame spread.
Our paint grade mantels are delivered to our customers unfinished and ready to install. Mantels must be caulked and finished after installation. We recommend caulking the mantel to the wall with a quality latex caulk.
Once the caulk is dry, paint the mantel with a latex or oil base prime coat and then top coat to the finish desired. We recommend keeping the mantel clean using a gentle cleaning solution recommended by the painter or finisher of the mantel. Once a year, or as needed, check the caulking for cracks. If a crack is noticed, re-caulk as necessary. Check that the finish has not worn. If thin spots are noticed, re-finish the mantel.
* Caution: Not caulking and painting the mantel can cause the chemically combined water to be driven off through the unsealed surface, thus possibly resulting in mantel failure, thus voiding the warranty.
